The Poquoson High School Key Club in raised more than $1300 for the “Eliminate Project” by raising awareness of the need to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. Working with each home room in the school, their plan was simple. They identified hundreds of things people buy every day for $2.00 and then showed their fellow classmates how instead of buying a candy bar or a soda, they could save a child’s life. The project was a complete success.
Club Spotlight - Division 9's North Hagerstown High School
On May 12th, 2012, the North Hagerstown High School Key Club held a “Save the Pancreas” walk-a-thon, which took place at the high school’s football stadium. Their unique event benefitted both the American Diabetes Association and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, two charities that are special to the club’s president and vice president. “Because both of our families have been affected by either of these diseases, we wanted to show our support and raise money to fight back,” says club president Maggie Manspeaker.
To prepare for the event, the NHHS Key Club spent hours passing out fliers, making motivational posters, asking businesses for donations, and even making ribbons to hand out. Many people from the North High community came to support the two causes, and a total of $1760 was split between both charities. Vice president Amy Calandrelle says of the event, “We didn’t expect to raise this much, but everyone in the club pulled together and worked really hard!” Due to the success of the “Save the Pancreas” walk-a-thon, the NHHS Key Club hopes to hold another in the future. Special thanks go out to the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown for their donations and support.

Club Spotlight - Division 10A's Forest Park High School Remembers 9/11
Sept. 12 - During the two-hour lunch duration of Forest Park High School’s four lunch shifts, students actively participated in a 9/11 memorial. This memorial, hosted by Key Club and America’s Club, paid tribute to each and every one of those who died that day. The clubs created a display of the Pentagon, Twin Towers, and Flight 93 and put them up on the wall of the main lunch room/”common” area. This display was filled with paper angels, each with a name of one of the 9/11 victims. During lunch, the students came up to the table and wrote five names on five angels which were then taped up onto the display in accordance with the location they died. There was a large student turnout and Key Club and America’s Club members made sure every name was put on the wall. The display will be up for all to see and remember.
